Instead the expected type of magic coming from wands/staffs, you could use magic like;

1. Harness the power of raw lightning and smite people.
2. Use different types of sources for magic; like a book or your hands.
3. Conjure different types of magic in form of weapons. So like a magic sword if you don't have one on you to fight.
4. Summon minions to fight for you.
5. Increase the power of your magic by leveling, for example at level 1 you have a fireball spell at level 50 you have a meteor spell.
6. Etc.

Eh I don't know sounds alright but it will change the prospective of the game
