I'd say it's suppose to be connected to that rope above it, to act as bait in a trap (probably hinted at by the dead and disturbed foliage underneath), but the connection between the rope and the carrot block wasn't finalised.

hmm…personally, I always thought the progression order of the metals would go: Copper>Iron>Cobalt>Thorium (or Copper>Iron/Gold>Silver>Cobalt>Thorium) And you make a good point on Cobalt which I hadn't thought about, which is it's brittleness… so maybe it might end up being like Minecraft's...

Um…that is not true if you check the bottom of this blog post, It shows that the player can also be an Elf-like creature, this suggests that there are other playable options, (maybe even providing the player with some kind advantages (whether bonuses to certain stats or something else)...
